“…Currently, glycerol is an abundant C-source derived from biodiesel industries that few microbes can use for lactic acid production. Cassava starch can easily be converted to lactic acid by R. microsporus LTH23, 6 but only limited lactic acid was produced from on glycerol media. We then developed mutant strains by UV and chemical treatments.…”

“…R. microsporus LTH23 was isolated from soil and identified by sequencing of the Internal transcript spacer (ITS) region compared with a previous study by Yuwa-amornpitak and Chookietwatana (2014). 6 The mutant strains of R. microsporus 2T5, R. microsporus 5T3, R. microsporus 10T5, and R. microsporus H120M4 were derived from the wild type R. microsporus LTH23 by UV and chemical treatments. The genomic sequence of R. microsporus LTH23 was submitted to NCBI gene bank under the accession number KU358721.…”

“…A few examples about the use of fungi for the direct conversion of starch to LA are also listed in Table . Among them, the best results were obtained by Yuwa‐amornpitak and Chookietwattana with Rhizopus microsporus reaching a concentration of 56 g L −1 pure L‐LA and a productivity of 1.2 g L −1 h −1 . In comparison, the process described in this study for the direct production of LA with G. stearothermophilus has a productivity of 1.8 g L −1 h −1 , which is the second best only after Zhang and Cheryan and has the economic and technical advantage of requiring no sterilization and of being run under non‐sterile conditions throughout the whole process.…”

“…As it has been shown that the choice of nitrogen source (N source) can have a significant impact on carboxylic acid production in different fungi species (Zhang, Jin, and Kelly, 2007;Yuwa-Amompitak and Chookietwattana, 2014;Guo et al, 2021) we examined whether this would also be the case for O. polymorpha. The original N source in the chosen Verduyn medium is ammonium sulfate ((NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ) (Verduyn et al, 1992).…”
