Abstract:ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with a thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13), also called von Willebrand factor (VWF) cleaving protease, acts as a moderator of VWF activity. ADAMTS13 cleaves VWF multimers, thereby reducing VWF activity in blood. When ADAMTS13 is absent (e.g., in patients with TTP [thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura]), accumulation of VWF in plasma can occur, particularly as “ultra-large” VWF multimers, with this leading to adverse outcomes such as thrombosis. Relative ADAMTS13… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
