Labral calcification in patients with femoroacetabular impingement

Abstract

Background: Histologically, several previous studies correlated labral calcification with degenerative changes of the hip joint. Also, presence of labral calcification might be associated with alteration of labral quality which in turn plays a crucial rule during decision making for management of labral tears. This study aimed describe the prevalence, patient characteristics, radiographic and arthroscopic findings of labral calcification in patients with symptomatic FAI. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on all patients who underwent hip arthroscopy in OCM Hospital – Munich – Germany, between April 2018 and March 2020. Skeletally mature patients who underwent primary arthroscopic treatment of FAI and showed radiological radio-opacity at the site of acetabular labrum in pre-operative radiographs were gathered and thoroughly evaluated. Medical records of included patients were thoroughly reviewed with documentation of personal data including gender, age, duration of symptoms (in months) and night pain. Data from preoperative examination and clinical data including passive range of motion, anterior impingement and apprehension tests were also gathered. Preoperative antero-posterior pelvic radiographs and lateral radiographs (Lauenstein view) of the affected hip were evaluated in all patients. Results: During the study period, 611 patients underwent primary hip arthroscopy for symptomatic FAI in our hospital.
