Labsystems Enzyme Immunoassay for Chlamydia pneumoniae Also Detects Chlamydia psittaci Infections

Abstract: In a recent article, Bas and collaborators compared different serological methods to detect chlamydial antibodies in patients with Chlamydia trachomatis infections and healthy blood donors (1). Using the Labsystems enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for C. pneumoniae, no cross-reaction between C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae was found. However, Gnarpe and collaborators recently showed cross-reactions between C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae, when the Labsystems EIA for C. pneumoniae was used on sera containing high tit… Show more

“…Partially automated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) have also been developed for routine chlamydial diagnostics (10,27). Both MIF and ELISAs are based on preparations of entire elementary bodies, which explains their inherent problems concerning cross-reactivities between Chlamydia species and even unrelated microorganisms (10,15,24,34).…”

“…We are unaware of any validation study for this EIA in UK populations. Moreover, when studied in other populations there remains concern regarding the specificity of this EIA 23,24 and opinion suggests that further validation for this method in clinical settings is still required. 25,26 Our study used CF, which is genus-specific, and when used alone is only reliably positive in systemic infections and may not detect localised mucosal infections.…”

“…For that reason the diagnosis may be delayed. Further, cross-reacting antibodies between C. psittaci and C. pneumoniae have been under discussion [12]. Often a late convalescent serum can be helpful to confirm the aetiology.…”
