Lack of knowledge and false perception on space spraying against dengue in endemic area

Abstract: Space spraying is still considered as the most powerful method to control the spread of dengue virus transmission, particularly in an emergency such as an outbreak. However, there is still limited information about how the knowledge and perception of people about space spraying against dengue. This study aimed to assess knowledge and community perception of space spraying against dengue in an endemic area. “…Presumably, the respondents could not state typical symptoms of dengue because they neither personally experienced the disease nor witnessed a case from a close relative or member of the community or due to lacking regular awareness programmes on dengue infection in their area. This presumption is consistent with earlier cross-sectional studies in Indonesia [ 88 ] and India [ 89 ] that could lead to failure in controlling the infection and a delay in medical intervention. Moreover, this situation might be worsening by lacking the knowledge of the vector’s habit, behaviour and life cycle as reported in this review.…”

“…Interestingly, besides bed bugs, Indonesians also have poor awareness of mosquito control. For example, a study in Central Java involving 273 respondents showed a lack of awareness and poor understanding on space spraying to eliminate mosquitoes in an effort to fight dengue outbreaks [ 54 ]. This condition emphasizes the significance of educating the public about proper management tools and strategies for managing and mitigating the spread of public health pests, including bed bugs and mosquitoes.…”

“…Similarly, abatement (larvacides) remains highly effective in eliminating mosquito larvae [13]. However, educating the public about fogging is crucial for successful DHF vector control [14].…”
