Lacrain: the first antimicrobial peptide from the body extract of the Brazilian centipede Scolopendra viridicornis

Abstract: Antimicrobial activities have previously been described by traditional Eastern medicine in Chilopoda body extracts, but until now no bioactive peptides have been described. In this study, a novel antimicrobial peptide, lacrain, was isolated from the body extract of the Brazilian Chilopoda Scolopendra viridicornis. The peptide was isolated by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Its activity was tested using a liquid growth inhibition assay and the peptide was characterised using mass… Show more

“…The physicochemical properties of andricin B were predicted using a bioinformatics tool (ProtParam in Expasy ProtParam). A CD spectrum was used to study the structure of andricin B (Chaparro and Da Silva Junior ). The software HyperChem 7·5 was used to calculate and predict the 3D model of the andricin B structure in its lowest energy state (Tang et al .…”

“…The haemolytic effect of andricin B was evaluated on human red blood cells (kindly provided by Shaanxi Human Hospital, Shaanxi, China). In this assay, 10 mmol PBS (pH 7·2) was used as negative control and 0·1% Triton X‐100 was used as the positive control (Chaparro and Da Silva Junior ).…”

“…Furthermore, a novel peptide called lacrain, was identified from extracts of the Indo-Burmese centipede Scolopendra viridicornis Newport, 1844 (Scolopendridae) that was only active against Gram-negative bacteria and also had no effect on human erythrocytes [221]. Thus, centipede antimicrobial peptides may yield both candidates for screening and lead compounds for developing more efficacious antibiotics.…”
