“…Yonge (1953) also showed through microscopic analysis of the gut contents of the shrimps, that these may be consuming material collected within the mantle cavity of the mollusk. The nature of the association between Pinna nobilis and some other decapod species is characterized as commensalism (Vicente, 1984;Vicente & Moreteau, 1991) or symbiosis (Laganà et al, 2007). It seems that all authors mentioned above agree that slight mutualistic elements are present (Rabaoui et al, 2008).…”

“…By some, this association characterized as commensalism (Vicente, 1984;Vicente & Moreteau, 1991), while for others, it represents symbiosis (Kennedy et al, 2001;Laganà et al, 2007): no indications of any type of parasitism have apparently been found, though slight mutualistic elements may be present (see below).…”

“…It can then be deduced that the shrimp's installation in the fan mussel seems to be realized during the larval stage. More recently, an investigation by Laganà et al (2007) about the metabolism of Pontonia pinnophylax has demonstrated that the shrimp is adapted to the relatively hypoxic conditions prevailing in the palleal cavity of Pinna nobilis (compared to free-living conditions). These authors also reported that Pontonia pinnophylax obtains some reduced products (e.g., lactate) from anaerobic energy metabolism and supposed that those products can be utilized by the host.…”
