Pinna nobilis, commonly known as the fan mussel or pen shell, is an endemic species in the Mediterranean Sea. The fan mussel population has recently been significantly endangered along the Mediterranean coast, mainly due to diseases. However, it has a critical role in the ecological system of the throughout the coasts of the Mediterranean. Therefore, it is important to investigate the interactions between P. nobilis and their enemies, parasites, symbiont in the ecological environment. Pea crabs are small crustacean and symbionts in a variety of invertebrates. They inhabit the mantle cavities of bivalve. The association between the pea crab, Nepinnotheres pinnotheres (Decapoda), and P. nobilis (Bivalvia) from the Aegean Sea, Turkey was examined in this study. The crab samples were collected off Urla Karantina Island, Izmir Bay, Aegean Sea. The biometric characteristics of bivalve and crab in this coexistence were analyzed. 80% of P. nobilis was occupied by N. pinnotheres. The weight of pea crabs was recorded between 0.01 g and 3.87 g.

While collecting Foraminifera shells from the bottom substrate around Pelješac Peninsula (southern Adriatic), the presence of Pontonia pinnophylax (Otto, 1821) in mussels, Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758, living in Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile sea grass meadows, was recorded. According to available data, it was obvious that detailed investigations of that species had never been made for the southern Adriatic. Ten samples of Pinna nobilis were obtained and only four specimens from the P. nobilis population were removed for investigation, from which eight individuals of Pontonia pinnophylax were isolated. The numbers and positions of the individuals were recorded. All of these were associated with their Pinna host in pairs, so the sex-ratio was 50% males and 50% females. Morphological study identified the left chela as the major chela in male shrimps. The largest host had the largest individuals of commensal shrimp. Total length appeared to be larger in male shrimps than in females. RÉSUMÉLors de prélèvements de tests de Foraminifères du fond autour de la péninsule de Pelješac (sud de l'Adriatique), la présence de Pontonia pinnophylax (Otto, 1821) a été observée dans les coquilles de Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758 vivant dans les herbiers à posidonies Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile. Selon les données disponibles, il est manifeste que des recherches détaillées concernant cette espèce n'avaient jamais été menées dans le sud de l'Adriatique. Dix échantillons de Pinna nobilis ont été obtenus et seuls quatre spécimens de la population de P. nobilis ont été retenus, desquels huit individus de Pontonia pinnophylax ont été isolés. Le nombre et la position des individus ont été notés. Tous étaient associés par paires à leur hôte Pinna, d'où la sex-ratio de 50% de mâles et 50% de femelles. L'étude morphologique a permis d'identifier la pince gauche comme la pince majeure chez les crevettes mâles. L'hôte de plus grande taille renfermait les individus de la crevette commensale les plus grands. La longueur totale est apparue plus grande chez les crevettes mâles que chez les femelles.3 )

During a study on the ecology and biology of the fan mussel, Pinna nobilis along the northern and eastern coasts of Tunisia, the presence of the shrimp, Pontonia pinnophylax and the crab, Nepinnotheres pinnotheres (Decapoda) associated with this bivalve, was recorded. The shrimp was collected only in the lagoon of Bizerte, whereas the crab was found exclusively at Stah Jaber (close to the fishing port of Monastir). P. nobilis was occupied by Pontonia pinnophylax in 23.3% of the samples and the associated shrimp population was dominated by males (63.6%). Shrimp couples were generally encountered inside the large pinnids, and the size of the shrimps increased with that of the host. P. nobilis was occupied by Nepinnotheres pinnotheres in 56.7% of the cases. The highest numbers of crabs were recorded in the oldest pinnids. The sex-ratio of the associated crab population was male-biased, 62.5% of the population being males. A morphological study of the two associated species revealed some features worth noting. In the female shrimp, distinguished by the right chela in the second pair of pereiopods being definitely larger than the left, the length of this appendage (both right and left) increased with individual size, but these two variables were found independent in the male shrimp. Concerning Nepinnotheres pinnotheres, the length of the two chelae of the first pair of pereiopods increased with that of the animal's body in both sexes. RÉSUMÉDans le cadre d'une étude sur l'écologie et la biologie de la grande nacre, Pinna nobilis, le long des côtes septentrionale et orientale de la Tunisie, nous avons observé la présence de la crevette Pontonia pinnophylax et du crabe Nepinnotheres pinnotheres (Decapoda) associés à ce bivalve. La crevette a été récoltée uniquement dans la lagune de Bizerte, tandis que le crabe a été trouvé exclusivement à Stah Jaber (près du port de pêche de Monastir). P. nobilis était occupée par Pontonia pinnophylax dans 23,3% des échantillons et la population était dominée par les mâles (63,6%). Des couples de crevettes se rencontraient généralement dans les grandes nacres et la taille des crevettes augmentait avec celle de l'hôte.
