Lameness associated with foot pain: results of magnetic resonance imaging in 199 horses (January 2001‐December 2003) and response to treatment

Abstract: Summary Reasons for performing study: The diagnosis of foot‐related lameness often remains elusive and it can be difficult to offer rational treatment, or to predict outcome. Objectives: To describe the spectrum of injuries of the foot identified using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to determine their relative prevalence among MRI diagnoses and to establish the long‐term results of treatment. Methods: The MR images of horses examined from January 2001‐December 2003 were reviewed. Horses were selected for… Show more

“…29 This outcome was superior to the results from horses with similar injuries managed conservatively (28%). 30 Based on this evidence and the advantages of the use of BMAC in clinical practice, BMAC appears to be an excellent cell-based therapy for practitioners managing deep digital flexor tendinopathy. BMAC is also being used for intra-articular therapy, but no clinical data have been reported on its use as yet.…”

“…Since the advent of the clinical use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) it has been possible to define more accurately a variety of different conditions causing foot pain (Dyson et al, 2005). The most common conditions include injury of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) (Dyson et al, , 2005Mair and Kinns, 2005;Dyson and Murray, 2007;Schramme, 2011), or the collateral ligaments (CLs) of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint Zubrod et al, 2005;Gutierrez-Nibeyro et al, 2009;Dakin et al, 2009a,b), navicular disease (Barber et al, 2006;Sampson et al, 2009;Sherlock et al, 2008;Dyson, 2010, 2011), and complex injuries involving several structures Sampson et al, 2009).…”
