Landmark-based Morphometric and Meristic Variations of Endangered Mrigal Carp, Cirrhinus cirrhosus (Bloch 1795), from Wild and Hatchery Stocks

Abstract: Wild stocks of endangered mrigal carp, Cirrhinus cirrhosus (Bloch 1795), continues to decline rapidly in the Indo-Ganges river basin. With an objective to evaluate its population status, landmark-based morphometric and meristic variations among three different stocks viz., hatchery (Jessore), baor (Gopalganj) and river (Faridpur) in Bangladesh were studied.

“…Orontes, Euphrates, and Tigris Rivers in Turkey. Same results are also observed by Ahammad et al [21] in Labeo ariza , Chaklader et al [22] in Ompok pabda , Mahfuj et al [23] in L. bata , Gain et al [24] in Cirrhinus cirrhosus , and Hossain et al [25] in L. calbasu . Morphometric modifications among stocks are probable, as they are purely detached and may have instigated from different pedigrees.…”

“…Furthermore the populations in this study may have originated from different ancestors. These explanations are highly matched with the previous research accomplished in Labeo calbasu (Hossain et al, 2010), in Channa punctatus (Khan et al, 2013), in Cirrhinus cirrhosus (Gain et al, 2017), in Labeo bata (Mahfuj et al, 2017) and in Labeo ariza (Ahammad et al, 2018). Truss linkage arrangements are a dominant tool for fish stock identification and therefore truss network measurements were employed in this experiment (Turan et al, 2004).…”

“…the two rivers are open water habitats, and the two beels are closed water habitats). Ecologically or environmentally persuaded phenotypic discrepancies may be beneficial to the investigation of the stock structure of exploited species, particularly during a short time frame (Gain et al 2017;Hossain et al 2010;Mahfuj et al 2017;Simon et al 2010). Phenotypic differentiation in the four populations showed strong overlap according to PCA and CVA results.…”
