“…We acknowledge that a shortcoming of this research is the missing perspective of the landowners engaged in biodiversity stewardship programmes. The challenges and opportunities which exist for landowners may very likely be different to those experienced by implementation agencies (Lute et al, 2017;Prado et al, 2018), and represent essential information required for advancing the implementation of biodiversity stewardship. Given previous research in South Africa regarding landowners' perspectives (Pasquini et al, 2009;Selinske et al, 2015), this research sought to expand our knowledge by focusing primarily on implementation agencies.…”

“…For example, approximately 28% of all CRP land was converted back to cropland or pasture from 2007 to 2012 (USDA NRCS ). This period also coincided with a combination of record high commodity prices and CRP contract expirations that created a perfect storm for conservation loss (Lark et al , Lute et al ). Consequently, the loss of CRP area has had adverse effects on wildlife populations (Taylor et al , Shaffer et al ).…”

“…Incentive‐based conservation redistributes this disproportionality to society, which receives the benefits via subsidized conservation payments through the Farm Bill (Rolston , Stubbs ). Although economic outcomes of conservation enrollment have been repeatedly documented as barriers to conservation adoption (Lynne et al , Macdonald and Johnson , Sorice et al , Reimer and Prokopy , Lute et al ), recent research elucidates greater reliance on incentive payments for producers to afford conservation programs (Sweikert and Gigliotti ). Collectively, these findings highlight the need to address agricultural conservation adoptions with greater focus on positive economic outcomes.…”

“…This complexity can be overwhelming for private landowners. Financial concerns of conservation adoption are well‐documented (Reimer and Prokopy , Lute et al ); however, recent research indicates that financial incentives are more than ‘incentives’ to adopt conservation practices but rather are necessary for landowners to afford the change in land use (Sweikert and Gigliotti ). Addressing these hindrances requires proactive approaches to simplify conservation opportunities and illustrate economic opportunities of conservation decisions.…”
