“…For example, to quantify fault offsets across the Peel Boundary Fault zone (Cohen, 2005) and to quantify degree of compaction-lowering of intercalated peats at shorter and further distance of burying deltaic river branches (Van Asselen, 2011). Furthermore, these water level isochrones based on basal peat data have provided context for many archaeological excavating studies on the Mesolithic and Neolithic of the Rhine-Meuse delta (e.g., Louwe Kooijmans, 1972;Van der Woude, 1983;Verbruggen, 1992) as well as in the further coastal plain (e.g., Peeters, 2007;Van den Biggelaar et al, 2015).…”

“…Detailed quantitative assessment of differences in sediment size structure and material composition were done on 22 sediment grabs collected by means of 100 ml plastic sample bottles from the upper 10 cm of sediment in the different zones of the bay. The samples were analyzed for grain size distribution, organic, CaCO 3 and lithogenic contents at the Sediment Analysis Laboratory of the Free University Amsterdam using general approach as described by Li et al (2015); Van den Biggelaar et al (2015) and Verhagen et al (2017) but with some essential differences, as the use of Na 4 P 2 O 7 was found to cause flocculation. After thorough mixing, subsamples of about 1 g were pretreated with 5 ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide (10 ml for strongly organic samples) to remove organic material, followed by 300 mg of CaCl 2 and then heated with 300 mg of NaCl to improve grain dispersal.…”

“…If after sea level rise or stream channel diversion the once dry locations were flooded, people moved away or adapted to this new situation, e.g. promoting the adoption of crop cultivation caused by the increased extent of wetland area (Van de Biggelaar et al 2014 ). In terms of coastal management it can be stated that people at that time were reactive (in a passive mode) against the threat of the rising water (Fig.…”
