Two methods, Google Earth and gaming engine "Unity" were used for landscape visualization. By using both Google Earth and Unity, walk-through simulation is made possible and utilization of both methods is a powerful tool for public understanding and for selection of alternative planning scenarios. The visualization systems with both methods are developed. SketchUp was used to create objects including building and roads. Plants are shown with billboard method or a simple 3D object. This result can be shown on the web. With the case study, the feasibility of both methods was proven. Especially, Unity has shown better performance for the real time landscape rendering or walk-through simulation. In the case of Unity, quite clear images on the ground and near sight were obtained. With the availability of 3D simulation on the Internet in both methods, we can intuitively realize the landscape.

Modeling of UTHM (Pagoh): 3D Building Models in Google Earth Utilizing Sketch Up

The main argument is shifting from 2D to 3D is in the beginning stages and creating 3D building is not trivial but a complex process. 3D building can be combined with the maps on Google Earth to provide geological knowledge. The location details in Google Map in Satellite view are not up to date. The map’s image shown in 2D mapping modelling should be substituted by 3D modelling to provide clearer visual view of the location. The main objective in this project is to construct an interactive 3D model of UTHM campus Pagoh that provide latest information about the developed building in UTHM Pagoh on Google Earth. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) has to be launced to collect footage of UTHM campus Pagoh and continue 3D modeling by using SketchUp software. Sketch up is one of the modelling software that employed to construct 3D building. The building of UTHM campus Pagoh models is presented in visual video. Lastly, 3D building was merged onto Google Earth and a visualization video is made to demonstrate the UTHM campus Pagoh in the context of real life scene.

Food systems are linked to multiple critical sustainability issues such as climate change, environmental degradation, and growing socioeconomic inequalities, and there is a clear need for transformative changes in how food systems are imagined and enacted. For transformations to occur, local governments and stakeholders must be able to consider achievable and desirable futures that involve radically different reconfigurations of space and land use. Based in Revelstoke, Canada, this study uses interactive visualization methods to engage local government and food systems stakeholders in an exploration of three future food systems scenarios that center on changes in food supply, food affordability, and food governance. An interactive visualization tool was developed using the Unity3D game engine, which visualizes how transformations of an underutilized railway site in Revelstoke may appear in 2100. The visualizations were presented to the study participants (n = 10) through an online, Zoom-based workshop, where ‘walkthroughs’ of the scenarios were performed by the researchers and the participants subsequently provided feedback. The results of this study indicate that visualization tools can elicit emotional responses, convey human relationships with food and nature, communicate power dynamics, and incorporate social justice considerations. The results also show that the visualization’s representation of local infrastructure and services, the completeness of a virtual environment, and the plausibility of a depicted future affect the user assessment of the visualized scenarios.
