Landslide scar/soil erodibility mapping using Landsat TM/ETM+ bands 7 and 3 Normalised Difference Index: A case study of central region of Kenya

Abstract: Landsat series multispectral remote sensing imagery has gained increasing attention in providing solutions to environmental problems such as land degradation which exacerbate soil erosion and landslide disasters in the case of rainfall events. Multispectral data has facilitated the mapping of soils, land-cover and structural geology, all of which are factors affecting landslide occurrence. The main aim of this research was to develop a methodology to visualize and map past landslides as well as identify land d… Show more

“…Panagos et al () generated a harmonized high‐resolution k map for 25 EU member states. Mwaniki et al () used Landsat Thematic Mapper/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus to map the k in the central region of Kenya. Many literatures have investigated representative land use types, slopes, rainfall intensity, and related soil properties to explore the assessment, mapping, and influencing mechanisms of the k at the national or regional scale.…”

“…By using the land cover mapping, the Landsat images would support the inventory of land degradation. It would visualize and map the past degradation of land surface including soil erosion, landslide, vegetation removal or land use changes 18) . In order to evaluate the changes in vegetation state and density…”
