In this paper, a facile strategy to develop graphenebased delivery nanosystems for effective drug loading and sustained drug release was proposed and validated. Specifically, biocompatible naphthalene-terminated PEG (NP) and anticancer drugs (curcumin or doxorubicin (DOX)) were simultaneously integrated onto oxidized graphene (GO), leading to selfassembled, nanosized complexes. It was found that the oxidation degree of GO had a significant impact on the drug-loading efficiency and the structural stability of nanosystems. Interestingly, the nanoassemblies resulted in more effective cellular entry of DOX in comparison with free DOX or DOX-loaded PEGpolyester micelles at equivalent DOX dose, as demonstrated by confocal microscopy studies. Moreover, the nanoassemblies not only exhibited a sustained drug release pattern without an initial burst release, but also significantly improved the stability of formulations which were resistant to drug leaking even in the presence of strong surfactants such as aromatic sodium benzenesulfonate (SBen) and aliphatic sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS). In addition, the nanoassemblies without DOX loading showed negligible in vitro cytotoxicity, whereas DOX-loaded counterparts led to considerable toxicity against HeLa cells. The DOX-mediated cytotoxicity of the graphene-based formulation was around 20 folds lower than that of free DOX, most likely due to the slow DOX release from complexes. A zebrafish model was established to assess the in vivo safety profile of curcumin-loaded nanosystems. The results showed they were able to excrete from the zebrafish body rapidly and had nearly no influence on the zebrafish upgrowth. Those encouraging results may prompt the advance of graphene-based nanotherapeutics for biomedical applications.

The use of curcumin, an active ingredient of turmeric powder (a dye component in curry), as a TiO 2 photosensitizer was investigated in terms of the photochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties.Owing to its strong visible light absorption and strong surface complexation, the curcumin-sensitized TiO 2 composite exhibited notable activities for the photochemical degradation of organic compounds, the reduction of chromate (Cr(VI)), and the generation of OH radicals and H 2 O 2 through the reduction of O 2 under visible light (l > 420 nm). Various spectroscopic methods confirmed the anchoring of curcumin on TiO 2 and the photochemical and PEC properties of curcumin/TiO 2 were compared with those of TiO 2 sensitized by a ruthenium complex (RuL 3 ) that has been frequently employed as a visible light sensitizer. Curcumin/TiO 2 exhibited consistently higher photochemical and PEC activities than RuL 3 /TiO 2 over a wide pH range in an aquatic environment. These results confirm the practical viability of using a natural food dye, curcumin, as an efficient, eco-friendly, and cheap photo-sensitizer of TiO 2 for solar environmental applications. However, it should be noted that curcumin on TiO 2 like other dye sensitizers is degraded as a result of the sensitizing reactions in water and should be considered as a sensitizing reagent, not a photocatalyst.

Idiopathic short stature is a common condition with a heterogeneous etiology. Advances in genetic methods, including genome sequencing techniques and bioinformatics approaches, have emerged as important tools to identify the genetic defects in families with monogenic short stature. These findings have contributed to the understanding of growth regulation and indicate that growth plate chondrogenesis, and therefore linear growth, is governed by a large number of genes important for different signaling pathways and cellular functions, including genetic defects in hormonal regulation, paracrine signaling, cartilage matrix, and fundamental cellular processes. In addition, mutations in the same gene can cause a wide phenotypic spectrum depending on the severity and mode of inheritance of the mutation.
