Language and music: sound, structure, and meaning

Abstract: Language and music are the most impressive examples of humans' capacity to process complex sound and structure. Though interest in the relationship between these two abilities has a long history, only recently has cognitive and neuroscientific research started to illuminate both what is shared and what is distinct between linguistic and musical processing. This review considers evidence for a link between language and music at three levels of analysis: sound, structure, and meaning. These links not only inform… Show more

“…Previous review articles have concentrated on the effects of musical experience on auditory and speech processing skills (Besson, Chobert, & Marie, 2011;Kraus & Chandrasekaran, 2010; or on the general link between music and language (Asaridou & McQueen, 2013;Slevc, 2012). One recent review did examine the music -L1 and L2 relationship with an emphasis on brain processes .…”

“…Most importantly, the research on the music-L2 link has been inclined towards phonology. Future studies should aim at examining other shared aspects between music and language; namely, structure and meaning (Slevc, 2012).…”

“…The existence (or nonexistence) of a relationship between musical and linguistic structure (syntax) has received increasing interest over the past several years (for reviews, see Patel, 2008;Slevc, 2012;Tillmann, 2012), partially because this issue speaks to the broad question of modularity: do the complex cognitive systems supporting music and language rely on separable, modular processes (Peretz & Coltheart, 2003), or does syntactic processing in music and language rely, at least in part, on a common system (Patel, 2003)?…”
