Lanthanum tetraboride

Abstract: The structure, homotypic with that of CeB4, ThB4 and UB4, was refined by the least-squares method based on 520 X-ray diffraction intensities. The B-B distances range from 1.75 to 1.85 /k, the La-B distances from 2.818 to 3.155 A.

“…The La-B system contains the cP7-LaB 6 (SG#221) 206 and tP20-LaB 4 (SG#127) phases 207 , which agrees with this study. At 30 GPa, an additional hP8-LaB (SG#194) phase defines the convex hull.…”

“…The energetic stabilities of LaB x compounds were evaluated from their formation enthalpies with respect to the dissociation products of La [42] and B [1] solids. Previously known LaB, LaB 4 , and LaB 6 phases were readily identified [18][19][20], indicating the reliability of our calculations (Fig. 1b).…”

“…The formation of La-B compounds under ambient pressures has been extensively studied, but only LaB 4 and LaB 6 phases have been characterized reliably [18,19]. Their structures feature three-dimensional B backbones of B 6 octahedra with La in interstitial sites.…”

“…The R ions form a frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) with competing interactions J 1 and J 2 [7]. Quite remarkably, high resolution structural refinement of LaB 4 [8] and HoB 4 [9] show that the R-R bonds corresponding to J 1 and J 2 are equal in length, making the R-sublattice a rare physical realization of one of the eleven Archimedean lattices [10] (Fig. 1(b)).…”
