Mobile traffic demand has been increasing exponentially over the last few years and forecasts show that this trend will continue in the foreseeable future. As a result, operators are forced to densify and upgrade their networks to meet this demand. This has created concerns such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions, high capital expenditures and associated energy costs. This paper uses tools from stochastic geometry to analyze and formulate energy-efficient deployment strategies for multi-tier heterogeneous networks (HetNets) using various user association schemes. We use simple approximations to combine the required base station (BS) density and associated transmit power per tier subject to both coverage probability and average user rate constraints. In this paper, this combination is called the deployment factor and it can be expressed in closed form for unbiased HetNets. We then formulate an area power consumption (APC) minimization framework which optimizes the deployment factor to derive specific optimal BS density and transmit power values. Furthermore, we perform a comprehensive study of the effect of biasing on the APC performance of biased HetNets. Our results show that for HetNets using the maximum average-biased-received-power (ABRP) association scheme, significant energy savings are possible with appropriate biasing.

Abstract-The paper focuses on how operators can meet challenges of LTE Advanced, LTE A through small cell deployment. LTE A is revolutionizing features such as Real time HD voice, video services and coverage with reduced cell drops. According to the performance targets defined by 3GPP LTE A will boost data rates from 150Mbps (LTE-Rel8) to 1Gbps. It will also ensure higher cell throughput, lower cost per bit, increased cell edge performance and upsurges of network efficiency. The answer lies in small cell deployment. The world is scaling down its parameters and so are the cell sites, allowing people to get more connected. Giant macro cell towers are being taken over with smaller units as also carriers are increasingly relying on small cell options. Small cells enhance cellular coverage and capacity in homes, enterprises, buildings and rural public areas. "They are low power wireless access points ranging from femto cells to microcells". This paper will review the enhancements that LTE Advanced will bring to the mobile network and the vital role that small cells play in realizing the advancement.Index Terms-Heterogeneous networks, LTE advanced, small cells, small cell deployment strategies.

A small-cell network (SCN) constructed by splitting a macro-cell into numerous small cells using an active antenna array system is studied. A synchronization signal appropriate for the SCN, virtually generated by an eNodeB with 3D beamforming, is proposed for efficient handover in SCNs. The virtual cell synchronization signal (VCSS) carries a macro-cell ID (MCID) and virtual-cell ID (VCID) in a hierarchical manner, allowing us to distinguish between an intracell handover (virtual cell handover within a cell without changing the serving eNodeB) and inter-cell handover (virtual cell handovers across cells while changing the serving eNodeB) in SCNs. Using the signal metrics obtained by the VCSS, an efficient handover measurement technique is proposed which can significantly reduce the processing time and overhead by distinguishing between the intra-cell/inter-cell handovers. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated by simulating two different deployment scenarios of LTE-based SCN with 3D beamforming.
