Large-Scale Experimental Investigation on Mustafa Pasha Mosque

Abstract: To evaluate the seismic stability of Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje strengthened by an advanced mixed technology, shaking table tests were carried out on a model in scale 1:6. The investigation was performed within the activities of the Sixth Framework Program PROHITECH -''Earthquake Protection of Historical Buildings by Reversible Mixed Technologies''. To define the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening the testing procedure consisted of two main phases: testing of the original model and testing of the … Show more

“…The higher modes relating to the mosque revealed a remarkable difference of required and measured frequencies. This difference indicates that the model was "softer" than required and could be considered as an "adequate" model with reduced strength characteristics, approaching a "partially true replica" model [Krstevska et al, 2010]. …”

“…The model was built using the same materials and techniques as in the prototype and according to the gravity forces neglected approach. The results of the experimental investigation are presented in a separate article [Krstevska et al, 2010]. The adopted physical model is suitable for structural configurations in which the stresses induced by gravity loads are negligible if compared to stresses induced by seismic actions, as in the case of the mosque.…”

“…For that purpose, the model of the Mustafa Pascha mosque that was damaged during the Skopje earthquake of 1963, Figure 12(a) was built [ Figure 12(b)]. In a similar way as that used for the cathedral, the non-damaged model was tested first and once the damages were defined, the model was strengthened (Portioli et al, 2011;Sendova et al, 2008;Krstevska et al, 2009). The strengthening consisted of incorporation of horizontal belt courses.…”

“…Nevertheless, stresses due to gravity loads would be smaller than those of the prototype by one times the geometric scale factor. This partial compliance with the laws of similarity has been called “simple model similarity” by Tomaževič and Velechovsky (1992) and has frequently been adopted in shaking table tests of masonry structures (i.e., Gavrilovic et al 1999, Krstevska et al 2010). We considered that, because the expected modes of failure involved out-of-plane bending and in-plane diagonal tension, the response of the model would be significantly affected by differences in stresses due to gravity loads; therefore, the model was designed and tested as a full-scale miniature temple.…”
