Large Scale Urban Reconstruction From Remote Sensing Imagery

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Automatic large-scale stereo reconstruction of urban areas is increasingly becoming a vital aspect for physical simulations as well as for rapid prototyping large scale 3D city models. In this paper we describe an easily reproducible workflow for obtaining an accurate and textured 3D model of the scene, with overlapping aerial images as input. Starting with the initial camera poses and their refinement via bundle adjustment, we create multiple heightmaps by dense stereo reconstruction and fuse them in… Show more

“…Additional information can be provided by RGB (Kim et al 2009) or multispectral images (Guo et al, 2011;Sohn and Dowman, 2007;Habib et al, 2010) exploiting the complementary nature between range and image data. As a result, most methods deliver simple prismatic models (Lafarge et al, 2008;AboAker et al, 2009), while other methods deal with the generation of reliable meshes, in that a decimated version of the original point cloud is presented (Kuschk, 2013). This kind of applications are suitable for visualization purposes on the web (i.e.…”

“…In their implementation, the pair-wise multi-view reconstruction method generates better results than the other method. Because of the efficiency and stable performance of the semi-global matching (SGM) algorithm (Hirschmüller, 2008), most researchers implement the binocular stereo method for satellite MVS datasets (d 'Angelo and Kuschk, 2012;Kuschk, 2013;Qin, 2017;Facciolo et al, 2017). In this paper, we also apply the binocular stereo method for MVS satellite imagery reconstruction.…”

“…In recent years many applications are suitable for visualization purposes over the web (e.g. Apple/C3, GoogleMaps) but these systems, impressive in terms of visualization, are based on the generation of reliable meshes that are a decimated version of the original point cloud (Kuschk, 2013). This approach make impossible to consider city objects as single independent features and is not fully suitable to provide semantic information and additional services.…”
