Larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti of some plants native to the West-Central region of Brazil

Abstract: A total of 42 ethanolic extracts from 30 different plant species, native to the Pantanal and Cerrado of the West-Central region of Brazil, have been evaluated for their larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae, the vector of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fevers. Among the extracts tested, that obtained from the trunk bark of Ocotea velloziana was the most active. Using a bioassay-directed fractionation of this extract, the active constituent was isolated and characterized as the aporphine alkaloid (+)-… Show more

“…Hence, there has been an increasing interest in the development of alternative methods of mosquito control which are less hazardous to humans and other living organisms. In this regard, plantderived compounds have emerged as good candidates, not only as new effective tools in vector management but also as environmentally safer agents (Garcez et al 2009;Govindarajan et al 2011;Kalaivani et al 2011;Prophiro et al 2011;Kanis et al 2011). The present study evaluated the effect of a novel herbal formulation PONNEEM prepared from A. indica and P. glabra oils to minimize human vector mosquitoes.…”

“…Flavonoids isolated from the leaves of Polygonum senegalese Meissn exhibited insecticidal and A. aegypti larvae growth inhibitory activity, even at low concentrations (GIKONYO et al, 1998;GARCEZ et al, 2009). The species that showed strong larvicidal activity against A. aegypti, with LC 50 values between 80 and 470 g L -1 , belonged to the Rubiaceae family, and this activity has been related to bioactive flavonoids.…”

“…Oxoaporphines and aporphines have been reported to have larvicidal activity against A. aegypti larvae. For example, liriodenine and (+)-dicentrine have been reported as larvicidal secondary metabolites with LD 50 at 3.6 and 30.2 ppm after 24 hours [2021]. Although the larvae belong to a different genus, they are from the same family, and the mode of action of these alkaloids could be the same.…”
