Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry U-Pb Dating of Detrital and Magmatic Zircons of Glacial Diamictites and Pebbles in Late Ordovician Sediments of the Taurides and Southeast Anatolian Autochthon Belt, Turkey: Indications for Their Arabian-Nubian Provenance

Abstract: Late Ordovician (Hirnantian) glacio-marine deposits in the Central and Eastern Taurides and Southeast Anatolian Autochthon Belt (SAAB) in Turkey are mainly composed of diamictites, subrounded granitic pebbles, and rounded/ subrounded lonestone pebbles. The granitic pebbles are dated as 576.

“…The voluminous early Palaeozoic siliciclastic sedimentary sheet of north‐eastern Africa and Arabia (i.e. Avigad, Kolodner, McWilliams, Persing, & Weissbrod, 2003; Avigad et al., 2015) is correlated, across north Gondwana to the Anatolian Block (Avigad, Abbo, & Gerdes, 2016; Ghienne, Monod, Kozlu, & Dean, 2010; Gürsu et al., 2017), and overall the detrital zircon U–Pb–Hf spectra in the Kyrenia range generally fits that of Palaeozoic rocks from north Gondwana (e.g. Avigad et al., 2003; Kolodner et al., 2006; Meinhold, Morton, & Avigad, 2013; Morag, Avigad, Gerdes, Belousova, & Harlavan, 2011).…”

“…The Hirnantian Halevikdere Formation begins with sandy diamictites, massive coarse-grained conglomeratic sandstones from the glaciomarine outwash, and clay bearing sandstones. This continues upwards with distal glaciomarine grading upwards to offshore shelf deposits of clayey sandstonesiltstone/mudstone alternations in the Adana (Kozan, Feke, Saimbeyli), Mersin (SilifkeOvacık), and Antalya (Kemer, CT) regions (Monod et al, 2003;Ghienne et al, 2010, Gürsu et al, 2017. Abundant erosion-based coarse-grained sandstone lenses with striated facets, dominant quartz clasts, a few felsic pebbles, and reworked micro-and macrofauna in the glaciomarine sequence have been reported from outcrops of the TAP and SAAB (Monod et al, 2003;Ghienne et al, 2010;Gürsu et al, 2018).…”

The Hirnantian Halevikdere Formation rests disconformably on the basement rocks and in the Mersin-Silifke-Ovacık area it is followed by fossiliferous lower Silurian to Upper Permian successions (Demirtaşlı, 1984;Kozlu et al, 2002;Koç et al, 2005;Gürsu et al, 2017Gürsu et al, , 2018.
