Laser-Induced Multidimensional Fluorescence Spectroscopy in Shpol'skii Matrixes with a Fiber-Optic Probe at Liquid Helium Temperature

Abstract: Improved methodology for chemical analysis via laser-excited Shpol'skii spectrometry at liquid helium temperature (4.2 K) is reported. Sample freezing is performed in a matter of seconds with the aid of a fiber-optic probe directly inserted into the liquid cryogen. Emission wavelength time matrixes, excitation emission wavelengths, and time-resolved excitation emission wavelengths are rapidly collected with the aid of a pulsed tunable dye laser, a high-resolution spectrograph, and an intensified charged-couple… Show more

“…Recently, Campiglia and coworkers (149)(150)(151)(152)(153)(154)(155)(156) resurrected the use of Shpol'skii spectrometry for the determination of PAHs. Whereas none of the early studies of Shpol'skii spectrometry focused on the EPA 16 PAHs, most of the efforts of Campiglia and coworkers (149)(150)(151)(152)(153)(154)(155)(156) were directed towards this list of PAHs.…”

“…Whereas none of the early studies of Shpol'skii spectrometry focused on the EPA 16 PAHs, most of the efforts of Campiglia and coworkers (149)(150)(151)(152)(153)(154)(155)(156) were directed towards this list of PAHs. In the early 2000s they reported improved methodology for laser-excited time-resolved Shpol'skii spectrometry (LETRSS) of PAHs at 77 K (liquid nitrogen) and 4.2 K (liquid helium) based on cryogenic fiber optic probes in the sample, excitation with frequency doubled tunable dye laser, and detection using an intensified coupled device (155). Later they used LETRSS at 77 K after solid liquid extraction to determine the 16 EPA PAHs spiked into a river water sample (156).…”

“…5(f)] to a single-exponential decay e -t/τ , where τ is the mean fluorophore lifetime. An iterative least-squares fitting algorithm was employed to obtain these fits and extract the corresponding lifetime values [25]. In order to perform the fitting procedure, the instrument response function (IRF) was also acquired for each detection setting.…”
