Laser surgery for soft tissue purulent diseases

Abstract: The original techniques of soft-tissue purulent lesion treatment by means of a continuous-wave CO2 laser are elaborated. The following laser treatment advantages--minimal tissue damage, prophylaxis of local dissemination of infection, haemostatic and sterilizing effects--have been proved experimentally. Laser utilization in clinical trial (360 cases) made it possible to obtain significantly improved outcomes and marked shortening of treatment.

“…Present-day C 0 2 laser systems utilize a continuous wave form that does not result in explosive disruption of the tumor surface [6] and that enables the sealing of vascular and lymphatic channels. Further, these systems have been shown to destroy cells, cell nuclei, and bacteria in the beam path, leading to the "sterilization" of wounds and a reduction in the incidence of wound infections, even in highly contaminated cases [7]. Many investigators [8-101 have demonstrated enhanced tumor cure rates in animals treated with C 0 2 laser surgery when compared to animals treated by conventional means.…”

“…Most of the literature relating to the use of laser in treating PSD has detailed the use of cutting lasers. The continuous‐wave CO 2 laser has been used to treat various purulent diseases of soft tissue, including PSD 17,18 . There are many advantages of using a CO 2 laser to treat PSD.…”

“…These systems have been shown to destroy cells and bacteria in the beam path, leading to the "sterilization" of wounds and a reduction in the incidence of wound infection [10,11]. Recent studies [12][13][14], however, demonstrate that viable bacterial and viral particles are liberated into the laser plume under certain conditions.…”
