Quaternary evolution of the Abu Quir bay, Egypt

“…It lies above the lagoonal deposits (Maadia, B 3) and on delta-front (borehole R1). Similar coastal sands were recorded in Burullus lagoon area and are dated as younger than 2,000 years BP (Arbouille and Stanley 1991).…”

“…The lithology description of these boreholes includes for the most cases; colour, grain size, carbonate content, organic matter, mica, lithic fragments, fossils, roundness as well as geotechnical properties such as density of grains and hardness. Earlier studies on Quaternary sedimentary facies and stratigraphy of the Nil delta coastal zone and adjacent shelf region were made by Attia (1954), Sneh et al (1976), Stanley and Maldonado (1977), E1 Askary and Frihy (1986), Stanley (1988), Sestini (1989), Coutellier and Stanley (1987) and Arbouille and Stanley (1991). On the basis of general lithology of the examined boreholes a simplified composite lithofacies column for Abu Quir bay and adjacent shoreline could be established (Fig 3).…”
