Mechatronics and Robotics (MaR) have recently gained importance in product development and manufacturing settings and applications. Therefore, the Center for Space Emerging Technologies (C-SET) has managed an international multi-disciplinary study to present, historically, the first Latin American general review of industrial, collaborative, and mobile robotics, with the support of North American and European researchers and institutions. The methodology is developed by considering literature extracted from Scopus, Web of Science, and Aerospace Research Central and adding reports written by companies and government organizations. This describes the state-of-the-art of MaR until the year 2023 in the 3 Sub-Regions: North America, Central America, and South America, having achieved important results related to the academy, industry, government, and entrepreneurship; thus, the statistics shown in this manuscript are unique. Also, this article explores the potential for further work and advantages described by robotic companies such as ABB, KUKA, and Mecademic and the use of the Robot Operating System (ROS) in order to promote research, development, and innovation. In addition, the integration with industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing, architecture and construction, aerospace, smart agriculture, artificial intelligence, and computational social science (human-robot interaction) is analyzed to show the promising features of these growing tech areas, considering the improvements to increase production, manufacturing, and education in the Region. Finally, regarding the information presented, Latin America is considered an important location for investments to increase production and product development, taking into account the further proposal for the creation of the LATAM Consortium for Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics, which could support and work on roboethics and education/R+D+I law and regulations in the Region. PurposeThis empirical study examines the drivers of consumer intention to adopt wearable technology for healthcare in a South American country. Specifically, it proposes and tests a model of nonuser consumer intention to adopt fitness trackers for healthcare purpose in Chile.Design/methodology/approachThis study draws on the technology acceptance framework UTAUT2 to develop and test a conceptual model of wearable technology adoption. Data were collected through an online survey applied to 470 nonusers of wearable technology in Santiago, Chile.FindingsFindings indicate that hedonic motivation, social influence and perceived usefulness have the strongest influence on intention to adopt fitness trackers in Chile for healthcare. In addition, health motivation is an indirect predictor of consumer's intention to adopt wearable technology through its effect on perceived usefulness.Practical implicationsThe study contributes to a better understanding of consumer intention to adopt wearable technology for healthcare objectives in a less developed country in South America. Findings are useful for wearable technology managers, retail business and public policymakers.Originality/valueDespite the vast growth and importance of wearable technology for healthcare purposes, academic research considering less developed countries is scarce, especially the South American region. The proposed model and findings can extend this research gap. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed as well as implications for public policy.

Los análisis más importantes de las variedades capitalistas en América Latina reflexionaron en torno al carácter jerárquico y predominante del capital transnacional o bien a la centralidad estratégica del Estado en su versión neodesarrollista frente a su precedente neoliberal. No obstante, dada la persistencia de las características estructurales periféricas habituales (en particular transnacionalización económica) y el ‘giro a la derecha’, es posible señalar que la desconsideración de la trayectoria histórico-estructural de los países latinoamericanos y el contexto hegemónico neoliberal en el que las respuestas estatales tuvieron lugar han vedado una interpretación más adecuada de tales experiencias latinoamericanas recientes. Con referencia a la experiencia argentina, el trabajo sugiere que la profundización del dominio transnacional y la marginación de otros actores productivos como las pymes no debería ser visto como una falla institucional, sino como una forma específica de funcionamiento estatal en el contexto periférico. Al respecto, este análisis vincula la intervención estatal con la incidencia de los organismos internacionales (por ejemplo, el Banco Mundial o Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo) como nodos difusores de ideas y enfoques de política centradas en una ‘competitividad correcta’ que ha inducido al Estado a actuar condicionalmente en función del dominio transnacional de la estructura productiva doméstica.
