“…For ClONO 2 , negative trends of −5.8 ± 1.0 % decade −1 and −8.2 ± 1.4 % decade −1 are found for the 1990-2009 and 1996-2009 periods, respectively. The latter value is more negative by about 3 % decade −1 with respect to the trend in total tropospheric chlorine of −6.0 ± 0.5 % decade −1 observed over the same 1996-2009period (WMO, 2011a. In the light of Reaction (R2), this larger decline of ClONO 2 is consistent with a decrease of stratospheric NO 2 of about 3 % decade −1 as observed since 1996 from SAOZ, FTIR, and satellite nadir NO 2 data sets, suggesting that NO 2 could control the trend of ClONO 2 together with total chlorine.…”

“…Ground-based UV-visible SAOZ (Système d'Analyse par Observation Zénithale) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectrometers have been operating continuously at this station since 1990 and 1985, respectively, providing more than two decades of measurements. A combination of stratospheric NO 2 columns retrieved from the ERS-2/GOME (1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003), ENVISAT/SCIAMACHY (2003-2009, and METOP-A/ GOME-2 (2007-2009) satellite nadir instruments is also included in this study, permitting, for the first time, a thorough analysis of the long-term evolution of stratospheric NO 2 from three (two ground-based and one satellite) independent measurement techniques at this site. The paper is divided into 4 sections.…”

“…Such models have been extensively used in recent years to infer trends in long-term atmospheric time series of groundbased instruments; in particular, they have been used to study the evolution of stratospheric ozone (Bodeker et al, 1998;Wohltmann et al, 2007;Fioletov, 2008;Mäder et al, 2010), NO 2 ( Van der A et al, 2006Van der A et al, , 2008Gruzdev, 2009;Hendrick et al, 2012) and other species (i.e. Remsberg, 2015).…”

“…Later, McLinden et al (2001) reproduced the observations of Liley et al (2000) using a 3-D CTM model, including halogen chemistry and assuming a negative trend in temperature of 0.5 K decade −1 . A few years later, Gruzdev (2009) analysed 23 stations from the NDACC database. Trends were found to be mostly positive in the middle and low latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) and mostly negative in the European sector of the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (NH).…”

“…The variability of the NO 2 content in the stratosphere and in the atmospheric boundary layer was studied thoroughly [28]; estimates of trends in the stratospheric NO 2 content were obtained [29]; and a significant negative anomaly in the stratospheric NO 2 content, caused by stratospheric air from the region of the Arctic ozone "hole," was observed over Moscow in the spring of 2011 [30].…”
