Lavender and peppermint essential oils as effective mushroom tyrosinase inhibitors: a basic study

Abstract: Screening and characterization of novel tyrosinase inhibitors is useful for applications in food technology,\ud cosmetics and medicine. The hydrodistilled essential oils from lavender Lavandula spica L. and peppermint Mentha x piperita L.\ud were investigated for tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Their composition was assessed by gas chromatography–mass\ud spectrometry. Both oils inhibited mushroom tyrosinase in a dose dependent manner. The IC50 values were estimated,\ud kinetics were analysed and Ki values were… Show more

“…Previous works on Mentha piperita indicate that its essential oil also inhibits the mushroom tyrosinase (IC 50 , 240 g/mL) (Fiocco et al, 2011) and may cause inactivation or inhibition of the insect tyrosinase which results in incomplete cuticle hardening and darkening (El Nagar et al, 2012). Fiocco et al (2011) concluded that Mentha essential oils are promising herbal ingredients for developing depigmenting agents in clinical, cosmetic and industrial processes; our data indicate that total extracts (polyphenols) may be even more interesting ingredients.…”

“…Also the P value beingtypically < 0.05 is significant, meaning that our results indicate a melanin decrease worth of consideration, especially inside the melanine macula This evolution is presented in the Figure S1 in Supporting information file. Lavandula angustifolia essential oil was cited in literature for its tyirosinasis inhibitory property [7,8,22,23]. This effect was demonstrated for the botanical world, on fungi.…”

“…Fiocco, D. et al, 2011 which constituted our premise, has not yet advanced any explanation on the relationship between chemical structure and antithyrosinase activity, namely, it does not express which substance in the composition of Lavandula angustifolia essential oil inhibits or blocks tyrosinase [7].…”
