Lay Bystanders' Perspectives on What Facilitates Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Use of Automated External Defibrillators in Real Cardiac Arrests

Abstract: BackgroundMany patients who suffer an out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest will fail to receive bystander intervention (cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR] or defibrillation) despite widespread CPR training and the dissemination of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). We sought to investigate what factors encourage lay bystanders to initiate CPR and AED use in a cohort of bystanders previously trained in CPR techniques who were present at an out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest. Methods and ResultsOne‐hundred and twen… Show more

“…Police officers were fully integrated in the OHCA alarm system in 2012 7. Experiences of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) outside hospital are mostly explored within the bystander population 8–12. Previous research in regard to FRs experiences of participating in emergency call-outs has been described in the context of traffic accidents13 and psychological consequences about performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) 14…”

“…Apart from improving laypersons’ skills, better insight into the attitude towards CPR and factors that may influence the decision to start may affect future bystander CPR rates 12 19 20. Aspects like fear to do harm, having no experience or uncertainty about the impact of recent alcohol-levels on CPR performance are everyday issues 13 20…”
