Layer-by-Layer Assembled Polyaniline Nanofiber/Multiwall Carbon Nanotube Thin Film Electrodes for High-Power and High-Energy Storage Applications

Abstract: Thin film electrodes of polyaniline (PANi) nanofibers and functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are created by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly for microbatteries or -electrochemical capacitors. Highly stable cationic PANi nanofibers, synthesized from the rapid aqueous phase polymerization of aniline, are assembled with carboxylic acid functionalized MWNT into LbL films. The pH-dependent surface charge of PANi nanofibers and MWNTs allows the system to behave like weak polyelectrolytes with controllabl… Show more

“…Carbon materials and conducting polymers can be incorporated through vacuum filtration,404 in situ polymerization,405, 406 and Layer‐by‐layer (LbL) 407, 408. Hybrid materials after optimum are expected to display high capacitances and improved stability due to the synergic effect of the two components.…”

“…1,2, 8,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17] To take full advantage of the anisotropic properties, a number of recent studies focused on the integration of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at a variety of CNT volume fractions (V f ) into a polymer matrix architecture, [18][19][20][21][22] forming an aligned CNT polymer nanocomposite (A-PNC). However, due to the limitations of sample size and testing techniques, which commonly include either bulk compression or nanoindentation, [18][19][20] previous studies were not able to determine the full constitutive relations for such materials.…”

“…Wang and colleagues have developed a method to fabricate mesoporous PANI films for supercapacitor applications on graphene nano sheets using particles of mesoporous silica as a template. 21 Also, thin PANI films have been grown on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) 22 and mesoporous carbon 23 to produce electrodes for high power and high energy-storage applications. Moreover, Abdiryim and colleagues reported a solid-state synthesis of PANI and nano TiO 2 composite with a specific capacitance of 442 F g −1 .…”
