Layered Double Hydroxides as the Unique Product of Target Ionic Construction for Energy, Chemical, Foods, Cosmetics, Medicine and Ecology Applications

Vadym Kovalenko,
Valerii Kotok,
Bohdan Murashevych

Abstract: Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) is an α‐modification of the M‐host (M2+) hydroxide, in which some part of the M‐host cations is replaced by M‐guest cations (M3+ or M4+). The emerging excess positive charge is compensated by the intercalation of anions into the interlayer space, which also contains water molecules. LDHs exhibit anion exchange properties. Targeted ionic design of LDHs via combining three components (M‐host, M‐guest cations, intercalated anions) allows the creation of a very wide range of highly e… Show more

“…Many authors consider the introduction of activating additives to be the most promising method for improving the characteristics of nickel hydroxide. Co electroless deposited β-Ni(OH) 2 , [104] β-Ni(OH) 2 with Ca and Zn addition, [4] Y addition, [105] Mn addition, [106] NiÀ Al LDH, [107] NiÀ Cr and NiÀ Mn LDHs, [108] Alsubstituted α-Ni(OH) 2 (NiÀ Al LDHs) with Co and Mg addition, [109] with Ca addition, [110] NiÀ Co LDH [111,113] were synthesized in this way. It should be noted that the authors of a significant number of works do not pay enough attention to the possible mechanisms of the activators' actions.…”

“…However, such mixtures cannot be used as antiseptics due to their irritating effect. Anion-exchange materials containing peroxyacid anions, in particular layered double hydroxides, will not have this disadvantage [4,5]. Another advantage of these materials is the prolonged release of active materials.…”

“…Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of inorganic layered materials characterized by positively charged ordered metal hydroxide layers that can immobilize diverse molecules in the interlayer space or on their surface. Known for their anion exchange capabilities, compositional flexibility, and high surface-to-volume ratio, LDHs are gaining significant attention across various technological sectors, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals [1][2][3][4][5].…”
