LC-MS identification and preparative HPLC isolation of Frankenia pulverulenta phenolics with antioxidant and neuroprotective capacities in PC12 cell line

Abstract: Context:Frankenia pulverulenta L. (Frankeniaceae) is a medicinal species with carminative, analgesic and antiviral properties. However, phytochemical investigations, antioxidant and neuroprotective capacities of this plant remain unclear. Objective: This work assesses the phenolic composition of F. pulverulenta shoot and root and evaluates their antioxidant and neuroprotective capacities.Materials and methods: Successive fractionation of F. pulverulenta shoot and root using 6 solvents were used. Antioxidant cap… Show more

“…In the plant, polyphenols protect from UV radiation, pathogens, oxidative stress, and harsh climatic conditions [ 1 ]. In the human body, polyphenols are antioxidants, and have diverse biological properties such as anti-diabetic [ 7 , 8 ], anticancer [ 9 , 10 ], anti-inflammatory [ 11 , 12 ], cardioprotective [ 13 ], osteoprotective [ 14 , 15 ], neuroprotective [ 16 , 17 ], antiasthmatic [ 18 ], antihypertensive [ 19 ], antiageing [ 20 ], antiseptic [ 21 ], cerebrovascular protection [ 22 ], cholesterol lowering [ 23 ], hepatoprotective [ 24 ], antifungal [ 25 ], antibacterial [ 26 ] and antiviral properties [ 27 ] ( Figure 1 ).…”

“…In another research by Brenza et al, 2017 [19], antioxidant APO loaded polyanhydride nanoparticles targeting the mitochondria of neuronal cells was performed. Though it showed lesser encapsulation efficiency (43%), the sustained efficacious neuroprotection ability of the APO-Mito was reported to be quite high and effective in mitigating the oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal damage [20]. In our research study, the neuroprotective activity of the formulated and optimized APO-NPs was assessed on the PC12 cell line, and the results exhibited relatively stronger neuroprotective activity of APO-NPs in comparison to the APO alone.…”

“…The ESI-MS analysis of compound 38 displayed a [M – H] − at m/z 635. It showed product ions at m/z 483, 465, and 313 in MS 2 experiments and thus was identified as tri-galloyl-hexoside (Ben Mansour et al, 2017).…”
