Analysis of nine composite soil samples, each made of three replicate core samples and their respective background samples collected from Okigwe, Nekede and Orji automobile mechanic villages were conducted. Metal concentrations (mg/kg) above the background levels in the top 100 cm soil profile ranges as follows: 748-70,606 (± 10114.3) for iron; 99-1090 ± 251.3 for lead; 186-600 ± 180 for manganese; 102-1001± 201.9 for copper; 8-23 ± 12.9 for cadmium; 4-27 ± 6.0 for chromium; and 3-10 ± 2.2 for nickel. The order of abundance is: iron > lead > manganese > copper > cadmium > chromium > nickel, with Okigwe > Nekede > Orji. Pollution indexes show that the metals have similar pollution trends in the three layers (L -L ), with L (0-10 cm) > L (10-20 cm) > L (90-100 cm) in Okigwe, L

In this study washing efficiency and desorption isotherms for heavy petroleum oil (HPO), Zn, and Pb bound to complex contaminated soils were examined using various soil flushing agents. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), methanol, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), and citric acid were selected as soil flushing agents. 3% (w/v) and 4% SDS showed the highest removal efficiency for HPO, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Thus, 3% SDS was chosen as the best soil flushing agent for HPO. In the case of heavy metals, 0.1-M EDTA showed the highest removal efficiencies. But 0.05-M citric acid was selected due to its economic and eco-friendly strengths. The desorption isotherms obtained using Freundlich and Langmuir models indicated that the maximum desorption characteristics (K F and Q max ) of HPO with 4% SDS and 90% methanol and heavy metals with 0.1-M EDTA and 0.1-M citric acid, respectively, were markedly lower than in other cases. In addition, when 4% SDS and 90% methanol were used for HPO in the range of C e higher than 600 mg/L, and when 0.1 M citric acid and 0.1 M EDTA were used for Zn and Pb in the range of C e higher than 300 and 100 mg/L, respectively, the distribution constant converged to certain levels. Thus, constant values of K U and K L were determined. It was found that these constants represent the maximum desorption capacity and they can be used as distribution coefficients of desorption equilibrium for the flushing agents. The results of this study provided fundamental information for the selection of the best agents as well as for the process design and operation of soil washing/soil flushing of complex contaminated soils.

Assessment of effect of pH, temperature and organic matter on zinc mobility in a hydromorphic soil

Before using Zn-rich sewage sludge in agricultural soil, it is very important to study the behavior of this pollutant and its mobility in semiarid climate to prevent the risk that may pose on the human health. Batch technique was used to study sorption and desorption experiments of zinc onto hydromorphic soil with a loamy texture. Results showed that the effect of pH ranged between 6 and 7.8 on zinc sorption amount was negligible. Whereas the coefficient of distribution K d at pH = 6 was 1-3 times greater than at pH = 7.8. The increase in temperature from 25 ± 2 to 40 ± 2°C increased zinc uptake by 4.37-63.2 % and 3.75-27.09 % at pH 7.8 and 6, respectively. The removal of organic matter slightly enhanced zinc sorption at alkaline pH; while it remarkably reduced it at acidic pH suggesting that organic matter effect depended significantly on pH. All sorption data of zinc fitted only the Freundlich equation. Also, the sorption energies (E) calculated from the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation were high implicating that the main process of zinc uptake was chemisorption. Zinc speciation after sorption experiments showed that the added zinc amount was mostly bonded to oxides fraction at alkaline pH and to organic matter at acidic pH. Zinc mobility in the two investigated soil pH values was similar, while its mobility was not very affected by the organic matter removal. The percentage of desorbed zinc (bioavailable) was higher into 0.05 M of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (about 20 %) than into distilled water (B4 %). From the principal component analysis, we deduced that pH was the main factor controlling zinc sorption and the coefficient of distribution K d was the best parameter that describes the mechanism of zinc retention onto hydromorphic soil.
