The geometric form of the leader trajectory is an interesting aspect of long air gap discharge research. In this paper, the 3-D discharge channel tortuosity in 3m rodplane gaps is obtained by following steps: Firstly, using two static cameras fixed orthogonally to record the face photo and the side photo of the discharge channel. Secondly, the 3-D discharge channel is reconstructed by employing image recognition technology. Thirdly, the discharge channel tortuosity in two-dimensional space and three-dimensional space are derived respectively, which satisfied the Gaussian distribution law. The statistical results indicate that the channel tortuosity will be conservatively estimated by using a two-dimensional method. Statistical results of the channel tortuosity with three-dimensional method indicate the following conclusions. The angle between the discharge channel segments and the gap axis meets the distribution of rational function and its average value and standard deviation is 23.8°and ±19.0°respectively; the angle between the adjacent channel segments also meets the distribution of rational function, and its average value and standard deviation is 13.3°and ±9.9°.

Current atmospheric correction methods for breakdown and withstand voltages in long air-gap configurations show deviations in comparison to measurement data when applied to correct for unusual or atypical atmospheric conditions (i.e., altitudes above 2000 m a.s.l.). The corresponding standards IEC 60060 and IEC 60071 show inconsistencies, although both are being based upon the same measurements and empirical models. In its first part, the concept paper at hand presents the current knowledge and problems of atmospheric correction. In the second part, the authors outline the possible steps for a necessary new investigation as well as the algorithm of a hypothetical correction method. The proposed research is based upon the recent knowledge that any breakdown process in air-gap insulation consists of the sub-processes streamer and leader. While their characteristics seem to be independent of configuration and voltage form, their ratio and proportion varies, which, in turn, defines the value of breakdown voltage. Therefore, the authors propose a sub-process differentiated, measurement-based evaluation of the atmospheric influences air pressure, air humidity, air conductivity and temperature. The main goal is to develop a generic physical model of the breakdown process.

SUMMARYThis paper presents an improved leader progression model (LPM). The model uses the proposed leader inception criterion for the analysis of lightning shielding performance of UHVAC transmission lines. It focuses on the discussion of the leader inception voltage of bundle conductors. The improved LPM is validated on 500 kV EHV transmission lines. The shielding performance of a UHVAC transmission line to be constructed in a Chinese Test Line Project is then evaluated. The results indicate that the power frequency operating voltage and the bundle conductor configuration have a greater influence on the shielding failure flashover rate (SFFOR) of 1000 kV UHV lines than that of 500 kV EHV lines. It is found that the UHVAC line to be built will not cause trip accidents due to shielding failure in flat terrain. In broken terrain, the SFFOR is only 0.0012 times/100 kmÁyear, which is less than the design limit.
