Leaders or laggards? The evolution of electric utilities’ business portfolios during the energy transition

Abstract: Effectively mitigating climate change requires a fundamental and rapid transition in the way electricity is generated and used. The global electricity sector, however, is still dominated by large incumbent utility companies, which have historically been slow to embrace change. Given this seeming contradiction, in this paper we investigate whether and how 25 of the biggest electric utilities worldwide have adapted their business portfolios during the energy transition from 2003 to 2015. We observe three develop… Show more

“…DeLlano-Paz et al[28] provide a comprehensive overview of studies that investigate the effects of diversification in the energy sector 3. Note that we do not consider traditional or fossil fuel based power production technologies given that many countries have started to phase out these technologies[64][65][66], and that they have become less profitable due to the prioritized feed-in of VREs in many countries[57,67].…”

“…Most part of countries opened their market during the 80's and 90's, thus, international companies become common producers, distributors and transmitter in other countries. Frei et al (2018) pointed out some of the biggest players in the electric sector. EDP, for instance, is an important player in Brazil, it is the same for Engie (the largest private company generator in Brazil) and Enel.…”

“…Mitigating climate change requires a fundamental and rapid transition in the way electricity is generated. While the global electricity sector with its conventional and climate-damaging power generation is dominated by large incumbent utility companies, local players, such as municipal utilities (e.g., German Stadtwerke), community and cooperative renewable energy (co)producers, are becoming increasingly important [1,2]. As the incumbents have historically been slow to embrace change [3], initiatives are increasingly taking place at the local level with the intention of accelerating the needed energy transition to mitigate climate change [4].…”
