-This paper reports the contamination performance of transmission line porcelain insulators tested under five different contaminant conditions -clean and ESDD (equivalent salt deposit density) level (A, B, C, and D) through measurement of their leakage current under drop of potential method. To estimate the contamination for transmission line porcelain insulators, leakage current waveform and its maximum value were measured under step-up power test. In the clean insulators test, % distortion factors decreased with increasing step-up power, and as the ESDD level increased, some characteristics such as frequency analysis, harmonics and % distortion facotor could be used for contamination diagnosis of the transmission line porcelain insulators.

Abstract-Partial Discharge detection techniques strive to ensure a safe and reliable power network by preventing power failure. In this work, electromagnetic sensing of partial discharge, in air-insulated medium voltage switchgear (Type D24-121114 of Driescher) is considered. The partial discharges are approximated by Gaussian sources. A versatile broadband sensor for detecting two major types of partial discharge was designed and optimized. The antenna has low return loss and high gain over the frequency band of corona discharge, 0.75-0.9 GHz and dry band arcing, 1.25-1.4 GHz. The horn antenna is incorporated into the medium voltage switchgear for detecting partial discharges. The analysis of the electromagnetic field distributions generated by partial discharges in switchgear is coupled with the sensing efficiency of the horn antenna. The results indicate a good correlation between the intensity, location and frequency band of partial discharge and their sensing. This study provides the foundation for a dual band detection system of partial discharge in switchgear systems.

Abstract-RF radiation due to corona and dry-band arc discharges have been observed using an antenna. Variations in radiated energy were observed due to change in the distance between two water droplets, the contact angle and the volume of the droplets, and the condition of the insulator surface. Changes in the frequency spectrum within the 800 MHz-900 MHz and 1.25 GHz-1.4 GHz frequency bands have been used to identify the transition from corona discharge to dryband arc discharge. The 800 MHz-900 MHz emission band has also been used to monitor the condition of the insulator. These findings highlight the potential for RF sensing in the identification of partial discharges and insulator condition monitoring.
