Lean Thinking to manage a national working group on physics aspects of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Abstract: To report how the adoption of a Lean Thinking mindset in the management of a national working group (WG) on the physics of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) contributed to achieve SBRT standardization objectives. Methods: Vision for the WG has been established as fragmentation reduction and process harmonization enhancement in SBRT for Italian centers. Two main research themes of the technical aspects of SBRT emerged as areas with major standardization improvement needs, small field dosimetry and SBRT… Show more

“…A National Working Group (WG) has been established within the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM) with the goal of improving the quality and consistency of SBRT treatments across different centers. The WG aims to achieve its goals through regular meetings, collaboration on research projects, and by providing educational opportunities for medical physicists aiming for the SBRT standardization (Mancosu et al 2021). Multicentre studies (Esposito et al 2019, Talamonti et al 2019, Pallotta et al 2022 and specific reviews (Giglioli et al 2017, Esposito et al 2020, Mancosu et al 2022 were conducted in the past few years.…”

“…To support medical physicists in handling technical and dosimetric aspects of SBRT, the Italian Association of Medical Physicists created a working group (WG) on this issue in 2013 named AIFM/ SBRT-WG. One hundred and fifty-seven medical physicists from more than eighty Italian centres participated in SBRT-WG initiatives in 2021 [12].…”

“…With the rapid development of society and the economy, optimisation of the management of healthcare systems has been increasingly needed to fulfil people’s growing requirement for high-quality medical service based on the premise of guaranteeing medical safety 1–3. Any disordered operation in the hospital could possibly have serious consequences, even medical negligence, threatening the health and lives of patients.…”
