Learning from Nature: β‐Sheet‐Mimicking Copolymers Get Organized

Abstract: The solution structures formed by coil-coil copolymers arise from the selective solvation of one of the two blocks and have been well described. In most cases in such relatively simple synthetic structures there are no specific attractive forces that can aid the aggregation process. Nature, however, provides plenty of inspiring polymeric architectures that are shaped and ordered hierarchically by noncovalent forces. The high level of structural definition displayed by proteins, for example, is unmatched by syn… Show more

“…[ 228 ] For example, peptide directed self-assembly of nanoparticles can form alpha helices and beta sheets to form peptide-particle hybrids. [ 226 ] In a HEPES buffer solution, parallel beta sheets of peptides (C 12 -AYSSGAPPMPPF) spontaneously form and take on a left-handed helical conformation due to the aliphatic tails of the peptides. When mixed with a reactive acid (HAuC l4 ), gold nanoparticles precipitate onto the peptide forming a gold nanoparticle helix.…”

“…Because of their tunable conformational structure and hierarchical self-assembly, peptide-polymer hybrid block copolymers have been reviewed, both in solution and in the solid state, with an emphasis on the supramolecular structure formation [3,12,13]. The current research trends are involved in the combination of their special organization and behavior with other kind of properties.…”

“…The fact that properties of a peptide domain can be imposed on the whole hybrid hydrogel [10] suggests that the supramolecular organization of hybrid materials is driven mainly by the biorecognition of peptide segments. This suggests that the understanding of self-assembly processes will undoubtedly contribute to a better understanding of the processes occurring in nature [11]. …”
