A Critical Review on the Junction Temperature Measurement of Light Emitting Diodes

In the new age of illumination, light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been proven to be the most efficient alternative to conventional light sources. Yet, in comparison to other lighting systems, LEDs operate at low temperatures while junction temperature (Tj) is is among the main factors dictating their lifespan, reliability, and performance. This indicates that accurate measurement of LED temperature is of great importance to better understand the thermal effects over a system and improve performance. Over the years, various Tj measurement techniques have been developed, and existing methods have been improved in many ways with technological and scientific advancements. Correspondingly, in order to address the governing phenomena, benefits, drawbacks, possibilities, and applications, a wide range of measurement techniques and systems are covered. This paper comprises a large number of published studies on junction temperature measurement approaches for LEDs, and a summary of the experimental parameters employed in the literature are given as a reference. In addition, some of the corrections noted in non-ideal thermal calibration processes are discussed and presented. Finally, a comparison between methods will provide the readers a better insight into the topic and direction for future research.

Solder joint qualities of light-emitting diodes (LED) lamps have a significant effect on their lifetime. Due to variations in LEDs, the product lifetime is determined by the lowest performing component of the product when multi-LEDs are used. In this paper, we propose a quick electrical inspection method of solder joint quality for LED products, which is obtained by the heating curve measurement for a short time with the forward voltage as a temperature sensitive parameter. The utility of this quick inspection method is verified by the measurement of a solder voids ratio based on the most commonly used approaches in the industry-x-ray. The proposed method is cost effective and only needs around 1-5 s for each LED, which is about one third of the x-ray. Therefore, the quick electrical test method is both meaningful and promising especially when carrying out quality tests on large quantities of solder and can be a highly recommended method to be adopted by the LED lighting industry.

The aim of the study is related to obtain real data for the LEDs' thermal load and characteristics of several LED lamps types H4 and H7 for automotive headlights with different cooling system.Power consumption, temperature regimes of the LEDs' operation, lamps' radiation spectral distribution, and luminous flux of lamps for automobile headlights with active and passive cooling system at different ambient temperatures have been investigated. The obtained data under real conditions of operation in several cars have been verified. The results are compared with the data in promotional materials and the requirements of Regulations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Studies enable to evaluate the feasibility, advantages and disadvantages of LED lamps of this type when replacing standard halogen lamps in headlights.
