Lee Waves Break Eddy Saturation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

Abstract: Eddy‐resolving ocean models suggest that the transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) may be insensitive to increasing wind. This insensitivity is due to eddies that flatten the isopycnals and compensate for their wind‐driven steepening. However, the eddy‐resolving models do not accurately represent the eddy dissipation processes that occur at scales smaller than the model resolution, including lee wave generation at rough topography. Using a lee wave parameterization in an idealized model of the S… Show more

“…For example, Trossman et al (2013) found that both N b and ΚΕ b are reduced when a lee wave parameterization is included in an ocean model. Furthermore, recent studies suggest significant changes in the sensitivity of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and ocean stratification to wind when lee waves are included (L. L. Yang et al, 2023).…”

“…(2013) found that both N b and ΚΕ b are reduced when a lee wave parameterization is included in an ocean model. Furthermore, recent studies suggest significant changes in the sensitivity of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and ocean stratification to wind when lee waves are included (L. Yang et al., 2021; L. Yang et al., 2023). The coupled climate model employed in this study, despite running at an eddy‐resolving resolution, does not resolve lee waves and therefore does not include these feedbacks associated with lee waves.…”
