LEED and Optical Spectroscopy Study of an Organic Epitaxial Multilayer Film

Abstract: Epitaxial multilayers of 2,9‐di(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐anthra[2,1,9‐def:6,5,10‐d′e′f′]diisoquinoline‐1,3,8,10‐tetrone (DMe‐PTCDI) were prepared on epitaxially grown phthalocyanine copper(II) complex (CuPc) multilayers on Ag(110) by molecular beam epitaxy. “…Longitudinal alignment of Pc columns from primarily alkoxy-substituted metalated phthalocyanines (MPc) can be accomplished with Langmuir–Blodgett deposition, , spin-casting, and even spontaneous assembly. Transverse orientation of Pc aggregates with the plane of the molecule aligned parallel to the substrate plane, an arrangement preferred for solar cell applications, is more difficult. Vapor deposition , and molecular beam epitaxy , of unsubstituted MPc achieved ordered multilayers with the plane of the molecule parallel to the substrate; however, ordering typically extended to only a few molecular layers. Chemically tailored phthalocyanines bearing hydrogen bonding groups within side chains , have shown promise in directing ordered aggregation in layer-by-layer deposition.…”
