Left atrial spindle cell sarcoma – Case report

Abstract: Primary spindle cell sarcoma of the left atrium is an extremely rare tumour. Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment since it responds poorly to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. In spite of all the treatment, the prognosis remains poor due to inadvertent delay in diagnosis, few therapeutic options and propensity to metastasize. We present a 47-year-old male who underwent a surgical excision of a left atrial mass in February 2010. It was proved to be a high-grade spindle cell sarcoma on histopathology. He p… Show more

“…Встречаются описания схожих клинических случаев с развитием острой сердечной недостаточности [5,6] и функционального митрального стеноза [1], причиной которых явилась левопредсердная саркома, при этом подчеркивается редкость этой патологии, важность ранней первичной диагностики и своевременного хирургического лечения опухоли. Клинический случай веретенообразной саркомы ЛП независимо описывают N. Mehta и соавт., 2012 [7] и R.M. White и соавт., 2018 [8].…”

“…The main factor related to the survival in patients with these types of malignancies is related to the total resection of the mass, reaching a survival twice as high when the mass is resected totally. Despite of advances in treatment, the prognosis of those patients is bad [16]. The common cause of death after microscopic resection is local recurrence of the tumor, which appears in half of the patients, with survival until 16.5 months [17, 18].…”

“…It also surpasses CT in the evaluation of tumor mass volume and tumor response to chemotherapy or surgery [3]. Despite the imaging technology available, definitive diagnosis of cardiac tumor is made through a tissue biopsy [2]. The biopsy may be percutaneous or transvenous, through endoscopy, mediastinoscopy or thoracotomy [2].…”

“…Despite the imaging technology available, definitive diagnosis of cardiac tumor is made through a tissue biopsy [2]. The biopsy may be percutaneous or transvenous, through endoscopy, mediastinoscopy or thoracotomy [2]. This allows us to evaluate the histology and malignant potential, which is important to establish a proper treatment and prognosis.…”
