Legal Psychoactive Substances as Risk Factors for Sleep-Related Bruxism: A Nationwide Finnish Twin Cohort Study

Abstract: Given the observed associations between alcohol drinking, binge drinking, passing-out due to excessive alcohol intake and coffee consumption, the results support our hypothesis of an independent association of both alcohol use, and coffee consumption with bruxism.

“…Heavy drinking and frequent alcohol intake during the day have also been associated with sleep bruxism. It is thought that fragmentation of sleep architecture and accumulation of neurotransmitters related to dopaminergic and serotoninergic pathways may be associated with the exacerbation of sleep bruxism [162,163]. Similarly, tobacco consumption increases the risk of having sleep bruxism two times [162].…”

“…31 Most papers describe that PS only reduce bruxism activity, but they do not eliminate the disorder. 29,31 Manufacturers of OTC occlusal splints claim that freely available splints generate a relaxation of jaw muscles leading to awakening with no pain. As the vertical dimension increases from the occlusal contact on the insertion of the occlusal splint, muscular effort decreases resulting in the relaxing of the muscles.…”

“…Female gender and age are associated with TMD signs and symptoms; in the age group of 20-40 years TMD are common [3][4][5][6]. Some studies have reported that alcohol consumption [12] and smoking [13,14] are associated with TMD, although the evidence is scarce [15]. A recently published study [16] revealed that major consumption of alcohol, daily smoking and use of snuff increased the risk for nearly all TMD symptoms among young Finnish adults.…”
