Lentigo Maligna With Spread Onto Oral Mucosa

Abstract: Background: Lentigo maligna (LM) is a form of melanoma in situ most often seen in white patients on sunexposed areas, primarily the head and neck. Spread of LM onto the conjunctiva has been reported. There have been no reports of LM extending onto oral mucosa. Observations: We report 4 cases of LM in white women with contiguous spread from perioral areas to oral mucosa. The locations of the primary lesions were the vermilion of the lip, vermilion and perioral skin, cheek, and cutaneous aspect of the lip. Three… Show more

“…46 Indeed, reports have described recurrences of MIS that have led to invasive lesions with severe morbidity or fatal outcomes. [47][48][49][50][51] Furthermore, a study done in Sweden concluded that the relative risk for later developing invasive melanoma among patients with MIS was increased more than 20-fold compared with the general population and that there was a statistically increased risk of developing invasive cutaneous melanoma at least up to 14 years after diagnosis of MIS. 52 Overall, respondents were also inclined to promote the screening of family members of patients with MIS.…”

“…It occurs on sun-exposed skin of faces of middle aged to elderly adults with a history of photodamage. Lentigo maligna melanoma is slow growing and has a prolonged RGP and is less invasive [31, 32]. Acral lentiginous melanoma is the least common form that accounts for approximately 5 to 10% of all diagnosed melanomas.…”

“…Lentigo maligna (LM) is a form of melanoma in situ most often seen on sun‐exposed areas, primarily the head and neck. The cheek is the most common site and the spread of LM onto the oral mucosa and lips has been reported 1,2 . The transverse twist flap technique has been reported for secondary reconstruction of asymmetric volume‐deficits of the cleft lip 3 .…”
