Leprosy: what is new

Abstract: Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is an age‐old chronic granulomatous infection characterized by prominent cutaneous and neurologic findings. Long known to be caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a new etiologic species was identified and linked in 2008, Mycobacterium lepromatosis. The BCG vaccine with highly variable efficacy may soon be replaced by the first leprosy‐specific subunit vaccine LepVax, which has recently moved forward in human trials. Recent evidence supporting theories of zoonotic transmissio… Show more

“…The transmission of leprosy is related to the host's genetic background and immune status. 7 It is crucial to emphasise the role of genetic factors and the immune system in the susceptibility to leprosy. Some studies suggest that host genetic factors could significantly affect the susceptibility to M. leprae and the clinical manifestation of the disease.…”

“…Minocycline showed faster bacterial clearance than fluoroquinolones. Minocycline and ofloxacin had a similar efficacy to 2 years of dapsone and clofazimine and showed significant efficacy against rifampicin-resistant strains, with fewer side effects and improved patient compliance [28]. However, relapse rates associated with these agents require further investigation.…”

“…Hansen’s disease (HD) is an infectious and contagious disease that mainly affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes, being caused by bacilli of the Mycobacterium leprae complex, which includes M. leprae and M. lepromatosis ( 1 ). HD is the most common treatable cause of peripheral neuropathy; however, it can progress to physical disabilities and deformities in the absence of an early diagnosis and the implementation of effective multidrug therapy (MDT) ( 2 ).…”
