Results from archaeomagnetic research on a Roman pottery kiln are presented. In a previous paper (Pares et al. 1992), a collection of samples from the kiln's heating chamber was studied and palaeodirection results were obtained. In the same paper, dating was performed on the basis of the secular variation reference curve of the inclination at Paris. In the present study, the palaeointensity was evaluated on the basis of the same collection of samples. The mean value obtained is 60.9pT. A comparison of this value with other available archaeointensity values, obtained from neighbouring territories, confirms the date estimated by Pares et al. ( 1992kthe middle of the 1st Century AD.

“…These long-term changes, the secular variation, correspond in London a n d , Paris to changes in direction of some 0.25" per year during the last 150 years or so (Tarling 1983). If such changes are regarded as typical of the rate of secular change, this would then imply that archaeomagnetic dating, using changes in direction, should be possible to within about 5-20 yr accuracy (Kovatcheva 1976;Thellier 1981;Langouet, Bucur & Goulpeau 1983). Master curves of dated secular changes, constructed from archaeomagnetic studies of materials that have already been dated by other means, could then be used to date unknown aged archaeological discoveries.…”

The first report of a palaeomagnetic study of a Roman pottery kiln is presented. Individual bricks from the walls of the heating chamber have been sampled and measured in order to determine their palaeomagnetic directions. The measurements indicate that the innermost part of the structure was heated well above the Curie point of haematite, enabling the use of the palaeomagnetic declination and inclination, after the axial dipole correction and fitting to the Paris Z ( t ) curve, to infer the age of the last heating event.

(Fontenay à Chartres-de-Bretagne) ; celle-ci était axée sur l'ensemble des structures des ateliers et non pas seulement sur les fours, et l'analyse des productions (analyse morphologique, caractérisation pétrographique, datation par archéomagnétisme). Cette recherche, nourrie par des réflexions méthodologiques, a fait l'objet de dix contributions qui reflètent la diversité des approches et renouvellent l'histoire des ateliers et centres potiers de la région Bretagne.A research project carried out between 1984 et 1989 permitted a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of the history of medieval pottery production centres in Brittany to be studied by a dialogue between history, archeology and archaeometry. Diachronic studies of the written sources (XIVth-XXth centuries), fieldwork and studies of the geological and archeological environment were systematically carried out, the excavation of two Carolingian production sites (Meudon near Vannes and Plangueuoual, Côtes-d'Armor) or from XIth-XIIth centuries (Fontenay in Chartres-de-Bretagne); these being axed on sise totality of the workshop structures and not only on the kilns, the analysis of the products (morphological analysis, petrographical characterisation and archaeomagnetic dating). This research, feed by methodological techniques, comprises ten contributions each reflecting the diverse approaches and the renewal of interest in the history of pottery workshops and centres rti Brittany.
