Abstract: Dans sa dernière publication (1981) sur la variation séculaire du champ magnétique terrestre à Paris, E.THELL 1ER suggérait un nouveau tracé de la courbe de l'inclinaison pour la période gallo- romaine ; on y observe un seul minimum comparable à celui proposé par M.AITKEN.Mais une courbe antérieure (1969) proposait deux minimums pour la même période. If such changes are regarded as typical of the rate of secular change, this would then imply that archaeomagnetic dating, using changes in direction, should be possible to within about 5-20 yr accuracy (Kovatcheva 1976;Thellier 1981;Langouet, Bucur & Goulpeau 1983). Master curves of dated secular changes, constructed from archaeomagnetic studies of materials that have already been dated by other means, could then be used to date unknown aged archaeological discoveries.…”
