Lessons from applying the systematic literature review process within the software engineering domain

Abstract: A consequence of the growing number of empirical studies in software engineering is the need to adopt systematic approaches to assessing and aggregating research outcomes in order to provide a balanced and objective summary of research evidence for a particular topic. The paper reports experiences with applying one such approach, the practice of systematic literature review, to the published studies relevant to topics within the software engineering domain. The systematic literature review process is summarise… Show more

“…In [2] this author identifies seven electronic information sources of relevance to software engineers in an attempt to perform an exhaustive search: IEEExplore, ACM Digital library, GoogleScholar, Citeseer library, Inspec, ScienceDirect, and EI Compendex. In addition, we include some other important sources in Computer Science to be searched in, such as Google, ISI Web of Knowledge, SCOPUS, DBLP, Springer Link and Wiley Online Library.…”

“…The search terms which we used to extract literature from the electronic collections, were constructed using the following steps, as described in (Brereton, Kitchenham, Budgen, Turner, & Khalil, 2007): (1) Define the major terms; (2) Identification of alternative spelling, synonyms or related terms for the major terms and (3) Use the Boolean AND for linking the major terms.…”

“…As has been noted by Brereton et al (2007), the domain specific idiosyncrasies of some digital libraries makes literature searching a less satisfying and more arduous task than is desirable. It may be worth investigating the possibility of interoperating the "Finding relevant conceptsseven steps" methodology with digital libraries on a case-by-case basis.…”

“…The advice on how to proceed invariably mentions the need for structure, rigour, a systematic approach, and comprehensive treatment (Brereton, Kitchenham, Budgen, Turner, & Khalil, 2007;Timmins & McCabe, 2005). Brereton et al (2007, Fig.…”
