Lessons learned from the introduction of genetically engineered crops: relevance to gene drive deployment in Africa

Abstract: The application of gene drives to achieve public health goals, such as the suppression of Anopheles gambiae populations, or altering their ability to sustain Plasmodium spp. infections, has received much attention from researchers. If successful, this genetic tool can contribute greatly to the wellbeing of people in regions severely affected by malaria. However, engineered gene drives are a product of genetic engineering, and the experience to date, gained through the deployment of genetically engineered (GE) … Show more

“…Current country regulatory authorities and regulations in place for GMOs are likely to be considered for GDMMs. Regulatory processes for GMOs in most countries were originally developed for GM crops (Akinbo et al 2021;Quemada 2022). In most countries, GM crops must obtain biosafety approval from the national competent authority for GMOs, and then are subject to a national variety registration process, which applies to all new crop varieties.…”

“…The European attitude toward GM crops has had significant influence on the acceptance and uptake of this technology in some developing countries, particularly in Africa. 147 , 201 , 229 , 230 Despite the fact that about two-thirds of African farmers are poor and can only benefit from new technologies that have the potential to boost crop production, some governments have adopted the European regulatory approached and driven GM food and crops from their economies. 231 Challenges in development of biosafety regulatory frameworks and the role of individual stakeholders in the facilitation of GM crops across African countries has encouraged a centralised approach to risk assessment similar to the European Union model of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).…”

“…Since the rapid advancements in biotechnology, genetically engineered (GE) crops have been created by inserting foreign genes to confer traits that cannot be obtained through conventional breeding methods [1]. Some GE crops produce crystal proteins (Cry proteins) derived from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt), which can effectively control pests such as Lepidoptera or Coleoptera.…”
