Lessons on eternal traversable wormholes in AdS

Abstract: We attempt to construct eternal traversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically AdS regions by introducing a static coupling between their dual CFTs. We prove that there are no semiclassical traversable wormholes with Poincaré invariance in the boundary directions in higher than two spacetime dimensions. We critically examine the possibility of evading our result by coupling a large number of bulk fields. Static, traversable wormholes with less symmetry may be possible, and could be constructed using the i… Show more

“…In particular, there is a phase transition at low temperature between the wormhole phase and a disconnected phase with two black holes. We also attempt to construct an eternal traversable wormhole but encounter various difficulties, which are similar to the difficulties in constructing wormholes with Poincaré symmetry in higher-dimensional AdS [56].…”

“…It would be interesting to find solutions at finite coupling and/or construct eternal wormholes in this context. In two bulk dimensions, it is possible to create an eternal wormhole [8], but the generalization to higher dimensions is not as straightforward -see, for instance [24].…”

“…In the study of SYK from gravity perspective, a crutial role plays consideration of wormholes in JT gravity [74,76,[79][80][81][82][83]. A interplay between baby universes and wormholes could lead to nontrivial effects and this subject requires further investigations.…”
