Let's look at the cockpit

Abstract: As part of our research on multimodal analysis and visualization of activity dynamics, we are exploring the integration of data produced by a variety of sensor technologies within ChronoViz, a tool aimed at supporting the simultaneous visualization of multiple streams of time series data. This paper reports on the integration of a mobile eye-tracking system with data streams collected from HD video cameras, microphones, digital pens, and simulation environments. We focus on the challenging environment of the c… Show more

“…Study strengths include creation of individual AOIs instead of standard AOIs for all participants to address systematic offsets in gaze data, consistent with other eye-tracking studies 19. In addition, we conducted think aloud interviews to confirm the accuracy of eye-tracking data and assess whether the visual attention represented their focus of cognitive attention.…”

“…Even following successful calibration of the eye-tracking glasses, it is possible to have a small but systematic offset between the actual and measured gaze location 19. To account for individual offsets in eye-tracking recordings,19 we reviewed the videos, the verbalisations from the think-aloud interviews and the heat maps to customise the AOI borders for each participant (figure 3). The final processed data were exported using the raw gaze filter 20…”

“…After this, a more detailed analysis was performed in which a total of 2240 qualitative data items were extracted and synthesised to uncover industry distribution and demographics as well as the different applications of eye tracking studies in the maritime, aviation, and construction industries. “…The approach described as Cognitive Ethnography [12] is of particular interest for our purposes in that it focuses on how meaning is socially constructed and cognitive processes take place through the coordinated activities of multiple actors using artifacts specialized for their tasks. Recent work by this group [13,28] using ChronoViz included temporal analysis of the coordination of control actions and even eye position with discourse among commercial airline pilots as they accomplish their tasks using a number of artifacts (i.e. controls) that make up a high-fidelity flight simulator.…”
