Abstract

Dear Editor-in-Chief, As practising specialists in the fi elds of oral medicine and maxillofacial surgery we would like to comment on the article published in issue 7/2016 of Bratislava Medical Journal from Zajko J et al (1). In our opinion it is extremely needed to report about lesser-known diseases occurring possibly in the orofacial region. In earlier as well as recent literature only few articles exist dealing with case reports of plasmocytoma (2, 3, 9), mostly of the extramedullary type in soft tissue emphasizing the clinical manifestation (4, 5) or rare combination with other malignancies (6). Epidemiologic evidence of the outcomes based on literature study is still controversial although radical surgery in combination with postoperative irradiation and chemotherapy provides acceptable results (7, 8,4).The authors stated that researchers still do not know exactly the causes of plasmocytoma but there are some factors that could be contributing to this disease. We would like to know whether the authors have noticed any factors of probable combination of factors in their cases? As this is a very rare condition with incidence of 3-4 per 100,000 inhabitants, would it not be even better to include the data from other specialists to create a larger study group for the analysis? The article reveals that all the patients were diagnosed at presentation with tumour-like lesions and had biochemically negative examinations. We would appreciate greatly any advice as e.g. on clinical symptomatology or radiological differential diagnosis that could enable general dentists to state an earlier diagnosis of plasmocytoma in the oral cavity.Despite our questions we would like to express our acknowledgement of the article and reported case with solitary plasmocytoma in the TMJ region. To our best knowledge, this is the fi rst case reported in this specifi c location.
